Chapter Sixteen

The next morning Velvet was up and packed for their travel day before Candy rolled out of bed. It took all of Velvet’s willpower not to jump into a rant about the previous night. She jostled her friend a little harder than normal to wake her.

“What time is it?” Candy stretched.

“We leave in two hours. Thought you might want to get packed and maybe eat something.”

“Yeah.” Candy tossed under the covers until she snuggled back into the pillows.

“How was your night?” Velvet bit out.

“Fun. Willem took me all over and we met some cool people.”

“Did you get my texts? My messages?”

“Some, yeah. Reception was wonky.” Candy yawned.

I bet! “You’re going to love them when you hear them,” Velvet mumbled. She didn’t flat out believe Candy lied but history had proven that Candy stayed glued to her phone.

“Huh?”

“Nothing.” Velvet sat on the edge of her bed. “I might sound...tight when you do listen to the messages. I went looking for you because I found out some stuff last night and needed to talk to you.”

Candy sat up slower than a Sunday afternoon. “What stuff?”

“Stuff about Willem.” Velvet’s body wanted to explode with a tantrum to end all tantrums but Zazzle’s words echoed in her head. “I’m not sure he’s legit.”

“Why? Because he’s interested in me?”

“What? Of course not.” Velvet balked. The tip of her tongue weighted heavy with perspective. “People have experience with him, Candy. Do you remember when we first met Zazzle? Willem was there. He was the one offering Zazzle drugs.”

The lack of animation in her friend meant only one thing. “You know?”

“Willem mentioned it.”

Velvet’s next question stuck in her throat as if she’d swallowed a wad of peanut butter. “And you’re still hanging out with him?”

Candy fiddled with her hands.

“What’s with all this?” Velvet’s finger flicked like a conductor’s baton to the various water bottles. “Did you take something?”

Candy leapt out of bed, snatching clothes and toiletries about the room for her suitcase.

“Are you?” Velvet demanded.

“Maybe I just want to feel good.”

“Even after all that happened with FeNom?”

“I’m not an addict.” Candy let out her exasperation. “See? I knew you’d freak out. It’s just fun. I need that right now.”

“Fun?” Velvet crossed her arms.

“Yeah, fun.”

“I thought we had fun when we played together.”

“We do. I need something different. Everything feels different now. I don’t know.” Candy rubbed her eyes.

Velvet wanted to bring up LED but Candy bit her head off every time she did. Things felt different without him and Velvet only guessed at how much that affected Candy.

“What about all the things Willem is promising you? If he knows you’re in a...rough place. Don’t you think you should be a little bit cautious?” Velvet sweat from the amount of word plucking she did, but if it kept Candy talking, she’d pluck away.

“Look, if you don’t want to work with him, that’s fine. Don’t make him out to be shady.”

“Your words, not mine.” Filter gone.

Candy growled like a caged cub.

Velvet prayed for patience.

“Okay.” Velvet clapped her hands together.
